As Khalil Gibran said, “The flowers of spring are the dreams of winter told, in the early morning, at the table of the angels.” Spring is a time of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation. The earth awakens after the long, cold winter months, and new life emerges. The new energies of the season awaken our senses, and we feel a sense of joy and hope.

Reconnecting with Nature

Spring is the perfect time to reconnect with nature. The earth opens its pores, delivering young shoots, and the body stretches and unfolds. If we realize the rooting specific to winter, to concentrate and cultivate our vital energy inside, we can flourish like plants. The sap rises at the tree’s heart, the body recovers, and a thousand shades of green dance in our eyes and nourish our Liver, a very active organ in Spring.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is the Liver and the Gall Bladder season. The function of the Liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine is to drain and purify the blood and, therefore, eliminate toxins. During the winter, the Liver is used a lot, and it has thus accumulated the toxins and fats of the winter that must now be eliminated to regain a healthy balance. Therefore, early Spring is the ideal time to detoxify the body. This cleansing period is essential to avoid an accumulation of toxins not evacuated by the body throughout the year. The energy of early Spring also returns to the surface to restore strength to muscles and tendons and clarity to eyes and skin.

Traditional Ayurvedic Medicine

In Traditional Ayurvedic Medicine, Spring is the season of Vasant, which means flowering. Its qualities are warmth, softness, smoothness, and humidity. After winter comes, the thaw and melting snow create a water spill. We must eliminate this excess Kapha (water-related energy); otherwise, we become vulnerable to Spring allergies and colds. This excess of Kapha can also materialize in the form of other ailments: weight gain, spring fatigue, weariness, or temporary depression. A diet that favors spicy, aromatic, and bitter tastes is recommended to awaken new energies and balance Kapha during these periods. But in the meantime, Ayurvedic massage treatments with lukewarm vegetable oils are also welcome to promote the elimination of toxins and awaken vital energy.

Spring is the perfect season to embrace new beginnings and renew our minds, bodies, and spirits. Let us all take advantage of this period of renewal and rejuvenation to connect with nature, detoxify our bodies, and awaken our vital energy.
